Reflections on the week that’s passed.
As we navigate the whirlwind of Christmas and the impending arrival of a new year, it’s natural to ponder the passage of time. Is it truly flying by at an unprecedented pace, or are we simply falling prey to the cliché that time speeds up as we age? Perhaps the relentless pace of modern life, with its multitude of distractions and obligations, is to blame for our perceived lack of downtime.
For those of us who grew up in the pre-internet era, the concept of waiting for entertainment or information seems almost quaint. I recall pouring over the Radio Times with great enthusiasm, meticulously circling the TV shows and movies I couldn’t miss, and then patiently waiting for them to air. Although nostalgia can be a powerful force, it’s essential to acknowledge that the past had its drawbacks – like having to wait for the library to open to conduct even the most trivial fact-check.
In today’s always-on era, boredom is a rarity for someone like me, who thrives on a constant stream of information. However, this perpetual connectedness comes with its downsides, such as the struggle to disconnect and relax. I consider myself relatively well-adjusted, given that I sleep with my iPhone in another room and keep it on silent mode, avoiding the temptation to scroll through Whatsapp chats under the covers.
One of the benefits of taking a step back from family and friends to focus on my work is that I can curate a list of interesting links to share with you. If you’re looking for a break from the usual Christmas festivities, the next 30 minutes of investing insights and news might be just what you need.
We’ll be back on Saturday, January 3, but until then, I wish you a fantastic weekend and a Happy New Year. May your investments perform well, your letters from HMRC contain only positive surprises, and any speculative endeavors pay off just enough to be enjoyable – but not enough to encourage reckless behavior.
